Veletrzni Palace museum of modern art Image Tour
The Veletrzni Palace building (1925-1928) was destroyed by fire in 1974, and only
recently repaired into its new function of museum of modern art. The restructuring
of the Veletrzni Palace into a museum respects the original structural system
of the building by clearly displaying it. The prevailing colour is white. The spatial
structure of the building basically is the shape of a rectangular figure '8', in
which the north part of the '8' is the high central space vaulted by a skylight, and
the south part of the '8' is the large and low trade-fair space. This space is not
part of the exhibition area.
Since a lot of museums in Prague are located in historical buildings, this is one of
the few which offers a modernist surrounding for displaying art. The situation in Prague forms a striking
contrast with numerous 'special-purpose' museums built in the last decades in the rest of
Western Europe (see the museum pages of LAVA).
It is in the Holesovice area, on Dukelskych hrdinu 7.
