Museums and Galleries Image Tour
- Veletrzni Palace museum of modern art
The Veletrzni Palace building was erected originally in 1925-1928
for offices, exhibitions, hotel, and presentations. It was designed by the
architects Josef Fuchs and Oldrych Tyl, after a competition including also
Aloise Dryaka, Emile Kotka, Frantiska Roitha, and Milose Vanecka in 1924.
It was destroyed by fire in 1974, and only recently repaired into its new
function of museum of modern art. It opened at the end of 1995.
- Czech Cubism Museum
Located in the first building erected in the style of Czech Cubism in architecture,
the building reserves its upper three floors for a permanent exhibition of this
style. The lower floors have changing exhibitions.
- Loretto
The 17th Century building complex Loretto has a permanent exhibition of religious objects.
- Rudolfinum
The Rudolfinum building (by Josef Zitek, built 1874-1885) contains next to the Dvorak Hall
and the Sukova Hall, also a series of exhibition rooms; Galerie Rudolfinum. It can be
reached through the entrance on the Vltava-side of the building. The exhibition rooms are
wonderful to see for themselves, regardless of the exhibition.
- Palace Hrzánu z Harasova
- National Museum
This late 19th Century building forms the monumental end of the Wenceslas Square,
although one should not risk life and limb trying to reach it across the street.
- Frantisek Bilek museum
The former house of the sculptor Frantisek Bilek is now a museum for his work.
- Waldstein Palace
The former stables of the Waldstein Palace are now a museum. It also holds the entrance to the magnificent
gardens of the palace.
- Prumyslovy Palace and Lapidarius
Located between Bubenec's great park and Holesovice the area containing Prumyslovy Palace
and the Lapidarium has numerous other structures and buildings for exhibitions, performances,
and fairs. Really special is the cylindrical building in which 'Jesus Christ Superstar' is
performed (foto not included). The musical is in the Czech language and outstanding.
Note:
The master-organization of most museums is called the 'National Gallery' (Narodni Galerie),
which actually is a museum, but spread out over the city in numerous buildings. Other museums
either are part of other organizations or privately owned. A lot of art can also be admired in
galleries.
